Thinking about doing the nano challenge

Sorry if that isn't spelled correctly but you all know what I'm talking about, I'm sure.
It's intimidating to me, though. Not the 50,000 so much, but having 30 days to do it in.
It really would be no big deal but I bet it has to be typed, problem is, I'm on a shared computer and my mans son is looking for work and the puter is his only means of doing so and well,,, not that I'm really complaining but he spends a lot of time online, doing other stuff as well.
But I'm sure we can work around that.
I was watching Jeopardy a few weeks ago and this guy had done that 5 times. I just thought I'd throw in some trivia.

Has anybody done this challenge?
If so, how does it work? What I mean, is is there a standard on the quality as well? Does it have to be edited?
If anybody has personal experiences with it, please let me know.

The premise for NaNoWriMo is pretty simple. You have from Nov 1st to Nov 30th (at midnight) to write a 50,000 word novel. It doesn't have to be edited and there is no quality standard. The point is simply to write a novel in a month.

It's a pretty fun process. I've done it three times, although I've only finished once. To update your word count (and to verify winners) you simply paste the text into your online account. There are forums and usually local NaNo groups that you can link up with. You can add friends and see their wordcount as they update it.

You have to write about 1,667 words a day to finish. You do get a nice little badge for your blog or website. You should check out their FAQ here. Hope this helps. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it or not but I have five English classes this semester and I'm getting my applications for graduate school out. Hmm....

Hi Franki

I took part last year having never written anything more than a couple of paragraphs before that. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I had always dreamed of being a writer but it had always been just that, a dream. I never really thought I could actually do it but when I heard about the challenge I thought I would give it a go. I am now determined to turn that dream into a reality.

You do not need to worry about the quality of the writing, it is only meant to be a first draft. The whole idea behind it is to allow yourself to write badly, no editing at all for the whole month, just keep writing. The editing process comes in December once you have the whole story down. No-one will ever read it unless you want them to. When it comes to submitting it at the end you scramble it so that it cannot be read, they just run it through a word count and then validate it. I found it extremely liberating and the forums are fantastic.

I can't wait to do it again this year, I have even got my brother to take part this time round. If you are looking for a writing buddy my user name on the NaNo site is Polgara, look me up and send me a message.

Happy writing
Alana
