What do YOU do when your characters stop talking to you?

I'm going to come right out and admit it.  I haven't been writing as much as I should in the last few weeks.

Here are my excuses:

1.  I've been working A LOT with church, youth group stuff, and volunteering at the girls' school.  It's kept me busy.

2.  I've not been feeling well.  Time to get the thyroid checked.  I've been sluggish and sleepy.

3.  And, this is the biggest excuse/reason: my characters are mutinying.

What do YOU do when your characters stop talking to you?

What does that mean?  Well, two things in this instance.  First of all, the story that I'm supposed to be working on is not the story that has been filling my head lately.  In other words, the book that I want to write is a different one than the one I feel/think I'm supposed to be writing.  The characters in Kingdoms of Blood & Magic have taken a vow of silence, apparently at the request of the characters in book two of my Instant Eternity series.  This is annoying, because I had intended KBM to be a stand-alone novel, that I could finish writing before following up on The Time Minders.  Now I have my doubts.  Its story is getting too long for a stand-alone, and it might end up carved out as a two-parter.  Also, like I said before, the characters have gone quiet. But not Angela and her friends, oh no, they're crying out to be written.  It's all so problematic, because I wanted to be in the querying phase of KBM by mid-summer, and now that's just not going to happen.

So, what's a gal to do?

I guess I'll have to listen to my characters.  No two ways about it.  I just can't write them when they're quiet like that.  I'll have to table Kingdoms of Blood & Magic again and take up the pen (or the keyboard) for book two after all.

Does this kind of stuff happen to any of you?

Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with short stories.

Perhaps you're writing chapters in your head, though.  Sometimes I skip around and write whatever's up front in my brain...even if it's not in the "right" order.  Go ahead and write what's there, and more will come.
