What would you do if your great idea was just release by another author?

So for the pas few weeks I thought I had this great idea for a book.. Started my notes, outlines and research.  But this morning I'm reading through my PW Daily newsletter and what do I find?  The release of a similar book...  Arrrghhh.  Now what?

Has this happened (which I'm sure it has) to anyone else?  And what was your next step?

  • Did you scrap the idea
  • Revise the plot or story
  • Tweak it and use the idea in another genre
  • etc....

As a newbie this is the first time I've actually seriously sat down outlined, researched and started on characters just to come across a new book with the similar plot.
