Writing & Motherhood...how can we do it?

I'm tired. We just moved apartments, my husband and both kids are sick, I have the busiest month I've seen yet with my business. But I have to write - so much of my business is about getting my "stuff" out there in the form of blogs, articles, and oh, I'm supposed to be meeting with my writing coach to see how my book is progressing..
In preparation for my She Writes webinar, Time Management for Mother Writers, I wanted to share with you all a bit of my own challenges and processes to break through and get it done.

Over the last two weeks, writing got put on the shelf because I was moving. In Stephen Covey's Urgent/Important Quadrant Model MOVING falls into the prioritized "Urgent AND Important" quadrant. So, in essence, moving "won" my time. But what happens to the stuff in the "Important but NOT Urgent" quadrant (aka my writing)? THIS is the stuff that Covey says we should be spending most of our time and focus on. It gets put aside....

The key is to bring it back to the forefront through planning and prioritizing. I need to make sure that the "Urgent but Not Important" stuff (hanging the Froggie toy holder in my bathroom) and especially the "Not Urgent, Not Important" (80% of my email) does not take precedence over my writing. So I make lists for each quadrant. And then I block out time to do ALL the stuff that is IMPORTANT (whether Urgent or Not) by literally chunking out time in my Outlook calendar. Oh, I am not perfect. There are weeks I forget to plan ahead, and the Froggie gets hung and the writing gets dusty. But then there are the weeks that I employ this and...I have a blog post finished for She Writes.

So you are tired! Like we all are, did you read the pice on Bloomberg yesterday, the new drug that is supposed to be making women, like us who are tired, more horny, but, and I kid you not, in the trials, which were called the bouquet series with names like Violet, Daisy, Dahlia and Orchid (are we throwing up yet?) , one side effect was...: feeling tired!!!! I was so inspired that I spent the entire morning, hell with the kids, writing a blog about such, language hereby caution included: http://barbidoesmiami.wordpress.com/

wow--I need that Quadrant Model soo badly--with three kids, a blog and a couple novels in progress--it's really easy to lose sight of the Important (but not urgent) stuff. Thanks for this reminder.

Thanks Anastasia - by your definition, if hanging the froggie is important b/c it makes someone else feel good, and that makes YOU feel good, then it gets kicked into the Quadrant 2 activities which is the area we should be spending most of our time!! I am a huge fan of "lightening up" - So You Think You Can Dance is my Quadrant 4 activity that might just have to remain on my schedule!

thanks for this Rebecca...we also have to lighten up when we don't get it exactly right. that froggie holder may not be important to us but it might be something a loved one cherishes and feels cared for when it goes up on the wall.
