I am the same for some of my characters. I keep in mind famous actors as I write. I like it. When I read books I often see them made in to films. i'm reading a series of books at the moment by Janet Evanovich, Her protagonist is a Bounty Hunter(not very good ) Stephanie Plum. She has two main male protagonists, Joe Corelli, a cop and a childhood friend, and Stephanie's mentor Ranger, when she started in the business .Both are love interests of Steph's. I see Taylor Lautner (Jacob in the Twilight Movies) as Ranger. Course you'd have to age him up a bit to late twenties early thirties.
The novel I'm working on at the moment is inspired by my muse, an actor. But on the flip side as Melissa has commented. Pictures from all kinds of sources can grab you too.
Hello Rosalind. I use pictures of unknown people very often and seem to be able to build around them. For example a picture prompt given to us by the facilitator of a writing group I belonged to of an elderly man standing by a a broken window became Yashe Ribar. (Ya she Ree bar) A Phoenix, a Partisan during the II World War in Europe, back to the old battle grounds for a reunion of the survivors of the German Occupation in Belarus. Actually our teacher told us after, the photo was of a famous sculptor. The picture evoked some latent memory in me.
I also have a wonderful picture from one of the Dove Skin Care Line advertisements, of an older woman with fabulous dark wavy hair, amazingly knowing brown eyes, a sensual mouth and olive skin. She became Miriam a lawyer, and she is the main protagonist of a novel I have in progress called No Tears In Manhattan. I'm a sucker for evocative picture prompts.

"Babble away, Lynne! It's true, there is so much to think about. What you said about narrowing your initial reach reminds me of Seth Godin. Do you read his blog? He's a marketing guru and sends quick snippets every morning. Good stuff."
