Writing a book, wondering if I should use certain product names, or just describe them. What's the legality of doing so? Any thoughts?

Thank you! That's basically the route I've decided to take. In this instance I am trying to describe a popular workout program. The name of the program isn't really necessary. It doesn't take anything away from the larger point I'm making. :) Thank you for your input.

Why not avoid the hassle of copyright etc. The scouring powder, Deli fried chicken. Blue late model sedan. Interestingly enough I went to a writers group featuring a lawyer talking about using real people and real things in your stories. It is better to disguise them completely because even if you can prove you didn't use the person the nuisance of defending yourself is bad enough. The attorney fees are just crazy. My thoughts are avoid the problem.
