In case you're not a reader of my blog, last December, I got a book deal from a traditional trade publisher. Even though I've been in publishing since 1987 in one form or another -- writing; production (taking books from the written word through the production process); editing; word processing; staffing (editorial talent); and self-publishing) -- it was my first time getting a contract as a writer from a publishing house.

I've been self-publishing my own line of ebooks since 2002. To date, I've self-published approximately 90 -- fiction and non-fiction. But writing for a publisher is sooooo different than writing for yourself. Even though I'm familiar with how publishers work, I learned a ton, which this post addresses.

I've finished the writing portion of the book; now we're in the editing phase, so I'm sure there'll be more lessons as the manuscript has been passed from the Acquisitions Editor to the Development Editor.

If going the traditionally published route interests you, I hope the insight shared will help.

Although this writing contract fell in my lap, it's something you can pursue on your own. In fact, many freelance writers specialize in working with trade publishers. There are tons of niches that need qualified writers, eg, education. You could be that writer in that niche.

It's a ton -- TON -- of work, but the pay comes in big chunks and is something most freelancers can easily live off of if they land just one contract every month or two. Really!

Read the full post, and feel free to share your experiences in the comment section -- or ask any questions you may have. I'll be more than happy to answer them if I can.

P.S.: Want to make money as a self-published author? It's what led to this "traditional" publishing contract for me. Get the complete self-publishing package, which teaches you everything you need to know.
