I like the idea of this blog-thing. I don't know if anybody reads it, so I use it as a place for thinking out loud about anything at all. I can't make it a how-to blog because I'm too new, I don't know how-to yet. I am an emerging artist. (Yeah, I claim that.)

I’m still thinking about Mary Karr and her memoir The Liar’s Club. Wow. Yes, I know the book is not new, but I am. Can’t help comparing my book (in progress) to hers, just can’t help it, because she writes brilliantly, and I want to write brilliantly. At first my book fell miles and miles short of hers in every way, but after a while, when The Liar’s Club had soaked into my synapses and neurons and settled there, my perspective changed itself. I began to see that I am not her, I'm somebody else, and my story is different. I believe my story has value, and on a personal level i.e. compassion, atonement, and epiphany, as good as any other true story. I think that's good.

The more I look at my life from the distanced overview of author, the more I discover little things about the odd spunky kid I was in my first eight chapters. She is innocent, brave, resourceful, and even endearing. She is discovering the world, and from a very early age she is aware. She wonders about things, about people and life and God. Mary’s book seems a little short on wonder, and avoidant of tenderness, compared to mine, so I’ve extend myself some credit for that. And I remind myself that hers was a different life. We are apples and oranges, and so I recognize, with conviction, that this is okay.

I wish I could write like she does, but that's not going to happen. What I can do, if I have the courage and grit and sweat to do it, is write like I do, and tell the truth about it like she did.
