716 Signatures, but All Fifty States
Contributor

Many thanks to everyone in the She Writes community who signed and shared the petition calling for legislation that would ensure equitable distribution of tax-payer funds received by arts organizations and institutions.  Together we have moved the conversation forward in leveling the playing field for all women artists.  We got 716 signatures and all 50 states!  I think that is progress and is indeed worth bragging about.  Winning = Progress.

The petition was a simple idea, an idea people got excited about, an idea whose time had come (and will come again).  The more I volunteer on the issues affecting the American people, the more I am convinced that focused effort on legislation is the way to go.  Changing/creating laws is the only way to make life better for the majority of the American people who would not have a chance for a better life, or protected rights, or the pursuit of happiness, without our advocacy efforts.

My plans are to re-group and then try again in a couple months--or perhaps a year from now.  I received feedback that I would like to incorporate into the next petition, as well.  With some minor adjustments, and continued advocacy work on all our parts over the next few months, I'm sure we can get even more signatures next time.

As I think about our position in this long march towards gender parity, I am reminded of a speech in 2008 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.  It was delivered by then, U. S. Senator, Barack Obama:

"Dr. King once said that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. It bends towards justice, but here is the thing: it does not bend on its own. It bends because each of us in our own ways put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice...."

Here's to "our own way."
