the maggots must have got to him by now

he seeps into the carpet,

he creeps out under the door

outside the policewomen cover their faces, retching

and now everyone knows he is exists

and now everyone knows he is there

and he will chase us out

we who did not know he died

who had never known his name

who didn't know he lay there, crumpled

a few feet from our exclusive lives

'cheapo towers' a shocked flatmate exclaims,

'where old men die and no-one notices!'

(now we know he existed, as the odour

comes under the front door, and we ponder our guilt,

and why he lived, elderly, alone

in the same dilapidated tower block as us)

 'this could have happened

anywhere', I respond,

yes, anywhere where people are lost and not mourned

in a tower block near a strip club where we women

do not go out at night, especially after we saw

the Met's yellow 'Can you help?' sign, informing us

of a rape in the car park below

anywhere where people are lost and not mourned

Let's be friends
