Are you constantly complaining... no matter what? Even when something good happens do you find a way to pull it apart, hurl it to the ground and then stomp on it? Does it seem to you that things that happen to other people are always better than what happens to you?

Everyone knows somebody like this... they could win the lottery and two minutes later they'd complain about it; "Oh look at how far I have to travel to get the money," or "It should have been more."

Now that's an extreme, of course, but you get the idea. Let me give you another example...

"Bob" is retired but wants to earn a little extra income. He happens to be great at phone sales, and he found a company from which he can work from home. He gets to pick the hours he likes and gets to sit in one of his spare bedrooms which he has set up as an office. Heck, he can even work in his pajamas, and doesn't have to worry about stepping out into that hot Florida sun. He doesn't have to worry about buying gas for his car, lunches out, or about updating his wardrobe.

But "Bob" still complains. "I don't know why I have to confirm my schedule on the computer, can't I just call them? I don't think my new supervisor likes me, so I'm sure he won't give me the good leads."

"Bob" should be happy. He is an older man and quite frankly out-of-shape, so doing physical work is pretty much out of the question. He can't even stand for very long without getting tired, so phone sales is perfect for him.

"Frank" is in a similar situation. He too is retired but he needs the extra money to make repairs on his car. "Frank," although a heck of a nice guy, isn't good at selling; he is a quiet, shy kind of fellow... definitely not the sales type.

"Frank" is limited in the type of jobs he can get; and he knows that, even though legally he cannot be turned down for work solely because of his age, that he is. All the interviewer has to do is look at his lined face, his gray hair, and the slow way he almost shuffles along to know he's up there. And he gets turned down for work; over and over.

In the meantime, "Bob" is sitting at his desk, feet up, air conditioning on high, and moaning that his coffee got cold. "Damn, now I have to get up to get a fresh cup." Yeah "Bob," all the way to the kitchen; that must be tough.

"Frank" finally lands a job at an inventory company and the job is quite physical. He struggles to count merchandise as fast as the eighteen years olds working near him. He has to get up at two o'clock in the morning to catch the company van that takes him all over the state to do his job; crammed between two twenty-somethings fighting over a guy they met last week.

But "Frank" is pleasant. Each day he works as hard as he can, comes in on time, and thanks his supervisor for the opportunity. Sure, he gets home from work dead tired, but he is grateful to have found a job. He says a silent prayer of thank you each night before he closes his eyes.

"Frank"is a joy to be around, even the younger people at work like him and ask him for fatherly advice which he gives freely.

"Bob" quit his job last week. His coffee kept getting cold and he couldn't find another outlet in his office to plug his coffeemaker in.After all, his kitchen was almost twenty feet away. That was just too much trouble for him to get up and refresh his coffee.
