Massage has been used for over 4,000 years for the treatment of many ailments. Massage is one of the oldest known forms of therapy and many chiropractors today recognize the many benefits of massage in chiropractic care. When you combine massage with chiropractic care you can receive substantial relief from aches and pains, sore and strained muscles, and relieve tension in the body and mind. Massage can increase blood flow and reduce depression. It also releases toxins built up in the muscles to give you relief and soothe your body and spirit.

Popular Types of Massage

There are many massage techniques used in chiropractic care today. These range from a light touch to deep tissue therapy. Here are some of the most popular massage techniques:

Swedish massage uses light gliding strokes aimed at relaxing you and providing a comforting massage experience. Swedish massage can be used to increase circulation, release tension, and help to lessen and dissolve scar tissue.

Deep tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage, but uses massage techniques to reach the deep tissues of the body. It is particularly beneficial for reducing pain and inflammation. Deep tissue is often combined with other forms of massage for maximum relief.

Trigger point therapy concentrates on specific areas causing pain. The goal is to alleviate pain through alternating isolated pressure and release cycles.

Sports and stretch massage is used for athletes. The stress of their sport may cause unique injuries or pain which can be relieved by specific types of massage tailored to their sport. It can be used before or after an athletic event.

Thai massage is combined with gentle rhythmic compressions and yoga like stretches. The compressions are concentrated along energy flows in the body called “sen”. This type of massage has been practiced in Thailand for over 2,500 years.

Reiki is a Japanese technique use for promoting healing, relaxation, and stress reduction. It is based on the theory of the life force energy flowing through living things. It is administered by laying on hands to adjust this life force during massage to a level in which you will be happier and healthier.

Prenatal, postnatal, and geriatric massage can offer relief and ease the discomfort associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and old age. Each session is tailored to the patient’s specific needs.

Reflexology uses pressure on the reflex areas of the hands and feet. Your feet and hands have reflex areas which correspond to almost all areas of your body and applying pressure to them can help to relive pain, inflammation, and relieve tension in your body.

Massage has many health benefits. When you combine it with chiropractic care you can amplify these benefits. If you are experiencing pain, inflammation, stress, or discomfort look for a chiropractor that offers massage as part of his or her practice.
