It is 1554 in the desert of Rajasthan. On a rare night of rain, a daughter is born to a family of Hindu temple dancers. Her name is Adhira, and she embodies a sacred craft whose very existence is under threat. Around her, the fortress city of Jaisalmer prepares to defy the armies of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, which are sweeping through India.

Fearing a bleak future, Adhira’s father, the temple’s dance master, puts his faith in tradition and in his child for each to save the other. Under his unwavering tutelage, she is destined to “marry” the temple’s deity, to give herself to a wealthy patron, and to live in submission as a woman revered and reviled. But Adhira’s father may not have the last word. Her mother opposes his plan, as do her brothers, with fateful consequences.

Even as she grows into an exquisite dancer, Adhira is powerless—until one terrible evening, when she must make a choice. The Adhira who emerges through loss and renewal carries her family’s story and their dance to a startling new beginning.
