It may be too soon to write this, because I've just been told we did not reach our funding goal, and although I saw it coming, I am heartbroken. I was hoping to fund a production of my musical "Room to Grow", a contemporary show about a large artistic family that moves into the "Perfect" neighborhood.

I thought I had done my research before we launched, and went into this confident that we could make this happen. I tweeted, facebooked, and reached out to other bloggers. I managed to get an article placed in a local online paper. I had the support of mommyshorts.com who put a link to our project on her sidebar. Sanemoms.com was also very helpful. The Bloggess herself tweeted it out. I even reached out to The Ellen Show. They ignored me, but then that was a long shot. I tweeted and facebooked some more.

In my research, I had been warned that family and friends alone will not get a project funded. You need to get the support of strangers. I did my best, but I was hopeful that Kickstarter would pick our project as one of the three or four projects they feature each week, and email out to untold numbers of people. When I contacted them about thisĀ I was shocked to find out that they only feature projects they are sure will meet their funding. This makes no sense to me, because they sometimes feature projects that are already overfunded. Why they would not help those in need instead, I don't know.

The past six weeks have been exhausting as I have worked ten or more hours a day, doing everything I could think of to get the word out. I guess the good news is that I have learned a lot, although I don't doubt I'll learn even more as I move towards my next goal of publishing my first novel. In the end, I'm not sure what to make of kickstarter. I guess if you are a great marketer it is worth trying, but you should know that it is a lot more work than it seems.
