On Writing

There's been a lot of chatter on SheWrites lately about the importance of book bloggers, and the amazing power they have to help get a book "out there." But it’s one thing to appreciate book bloggers and quite another to actually harness this new force in the universe. Book bloggers are a diverse bunch. It’s intimidating. So I asked book blogger Jen Karsbaek to weigh in on working with them. Here’s what she had to say.

Working with Book Bloggers and the Worst. Pitch. Ever.

Why Do I Write?
I write because I have no choice. I write because it is my way of crystallizing my thoughts about the world.
Added by Maggie Black on October 20, 2011 at 11:34am
I write because I have to... it is as much a part of me as the air I breathe. I feel that it is as if there are so many stories waiting to be discovered and told within my mind. My first two books were autobiographical, which I think is the most difficult to do,so much pain, sadness and loss. However then came the morning and that is why I needed to share.

I live this side of a mental screen door,
able to view the world and form ideas,
unable to come out and speak them
with ease, or in any causal way.
I write to you, on the other side
of that door;
you, who go, and do, and chatter.
I write to let you know I'm here.
Even though you don't often
come to the door,
I have things to tell about, too.
My words are my voice,
my presence…Continue

I like the sound and pattern of the words,
the shapes and ideas.
I like the thoughts and dreads of other,
the love and nuisances,
the strange lands.
I have always written in my head,
called thoughts by others,
and wrote them down some years now,
but thought nothing of it,
then started blogging,
and people said, hey ho,
look poetry.
and so it…Continue

I’m like a jellyfish exposed to predators and currents.
Writing builds a carapace, a backbone, possible metamorphosis to a higher lifeform.

I stole this title from Joan Didion who, herself, stole it from George Orwell. These are two decent names to include in any piece on writing, I admit.
Today is the National Day on Writing. For the third year in a row, the Senate passed a resolution marking October 20 as a day to recognize writing. This comes at a time when many are lamenting the demise of the written word.
Yesterday, I attended the annual Hawaii Social Media Summit in Honolulu. Newspaper-reporter-turned-blogger…Continue

Simple answer. I breathe; therefore I write. I couldn't imagine not writing. When I was young in my room all alone, a pen and paper kept me company, entertained me. Writing has always been my outlet. If I had something to say and my shyness got in the way, I was always able to… Continue

I write to give voice to the soul, to recharge the spirit, and to remind myself to laugh at life.

On Publishing
John:
“Don’t you think that, thanks to the gigantic leap forward that e-publishing represents, more authors will find it easier to target their niches and find a devoted core readership? Obviously, this requires analytic thinking and a knowledge of the market… but what about…Continue

Last Friday, I took the #4 train down to Fulton Street to video-explore the real time history-in-transit that is #OccupyWallStreet at Zuccotti Park/Liberty Square. Though I had been following the stories, the tweets, the memes and viral videos as they traversed social media, I had yet to head south and experience the events firsthand.
While I expected police personnel, signage, dancing, drumming, tarps and tents, there were many other unexpected observations that met the lens. For one, the plethora of cameras, both professional video rigs and high-tech digital SLRs, along with iPhones, cell phones and minicams of all stripes, recording the events. So many witnesses, so many eyes, so many stories being captured.
Beyond the obvious interest in the diversity of voices inhabiting the park, the "microphone check" information relay remains a fascinating instance of analog transmission in an otherwise high tech era of documentation. Because megaphones are…Continue
A few weeks ago, my husband’s aunt sent me a handwritten letter. I will be honest here - when I first received it, I opened it up, felt the thickness of the folded up yellow sheets, and inwardly groaned. I wanted to have enough time to sit and read the entire thing without interruption, but when was I going to…Continue

Jackson Brodie returns! Atkinson entered the list of my favorite authors with her first book, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, and each new book has only confirmed my opinion of her writing. This is her fourth book featuring now-retired private investigator Jackson Brodie. The first is currently being televised by Masterpiece, starring Jason Isaacs as Brodie.
To give some structure to what he calls his "semiretired" life, Brodie is criss-crossing Britain in search of…Continue
