I've been going through writer's block for about a year now. I've tried sitting and writing on the novels I've started time and time again, with no luck, and I thought I didn't have any inspiration to write anything new.
And then today, as I was idly daydreaming away, I realized that I've been restricting myself. I have ideas float through my head and I think "that's too similar to my other story" or "that's just an idea based on my own little fantasies. Nobody else is going to want to read that."
But why not? Why not write something, even if it is similar to something else I've written? Why not write out my daydreaming? Even if all it accomplishes is exercising my writing muscles, it's worthwhile. It gets me thinking, gets me excited for writing, gets me inspired to work on other stories.
So today, I've decided to be conscious about how I write. To pay attention to why I'm not feeling inspired, why I don't feel like writing, and to be sure that I'm not unconsciously restricting myself just because I think it's too similar to something else or it's too silly.
Because nothing is terrible if it gets me back into writing.
