In a flurry of excitement I signed up for a creative writing course, and now I'm wondering if it will be worth it. I keep thinking about all those great authors, past and present who have never been near a course to teach them how to write. Is the talent inborn or can it be learned?
These are the questions that are troubling me at the moment.
Not to mention that the course may well be over before it begins, as the tutor is bemoaning the small number of people that have enrolled.
The first week was more of a getting to know your 'Voice', as the lecturer explained everyone writes in a certain style and mine is apparently journalistic. Though that conclusion was reached on the strength of one short paragraph we were asked to write with the following prompt 'I remember blue'.
My fellow students are a mixed bunch, there is one older women who has apparently been attending writing course for 18 years, and that's definitely a little discouraging. One gentleman who is destined to become the class bore, his questions and replies to queries are interminable and delivered in a halting voice that adds minutes to every response he makes. A foreign lady whose grasp of English is not the best, a rather sweet girl who when asked to read out her work, is very shy about it. And two other people who haven't really made an impression yet.
The tutor repeats herself and insists on reading out loud those examples of literature that she has already given us in a handout. And that is beginning to grate after just one week, it is a colossal waste of time listening to her stumbling over the swear words (she is quite straitlaced) and trying to 'do' different voices for the different characters.
On rereading  this all seems to be very negative , but I truly hope that it turns into a very positive experience, I want some constructive criticism and feedback on my efforts so far. I want to write but I fear that I am lacking the imagination and self discipline to sit and write every day..
