Shewriters, I am wondering if you are questioning the merits of an agent and traditional publisher as I am. The more posts I read about how we as writers have to promote, promote, promote the more I wonder what agents do. I’m going to guess that they have connections I don’t have to big name publishers, but then what? Do you hand your book over and lose all control while still having to do all of the promotion?

Perhaps it would be better to self-publish, if what you dread most about writing is having to sell yourself and yet you are going to have to do it anyway. Do such things as an advance exist in publishing anymore? Do you have to give it back if you don’t promote yourself well enough and the book doesn’t sell as well as you and they had hoped? I’m sincerely curious about these things.

I have three novels ready to go and a fourth that just needs to be put into the computer because it was written in notebooks. I want to share my writing with as many readers as possible, but at this point I am conflicted as to which route I should take. If you have published a book in either way please share your experience.  If you had it to do all over again, would you do things the same? I’m sure I can’t be the only one among us that would like to know.

    An agent is not supposed to promote. All they do is help get you a publishing contract. A book marketer or promoter, promotes.
