Forty Three Dollars For A Movie?

My eleven year old daughter and her friend love “Glee”, and they have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Glee movie. Sadly, money has been stupidly tight this summer, but I had promised we’d go see it as soon as it came out, and Yikes! That was today. I had foolishly forgotten that it was in 3D. I know it’s in the title and all, but somehow I forgot that we’d have to spend extra for the thrill of 3D.

Forty three dollars later my daughter, her best friend and I walked into a matinee showing of the movie. SPOILER ALERT: Here’s what I thought I was going to see: Concert footage of the kids (and I use that term loosely as some of them are nearly 30) singing and dancing. Here’s what I got: A sermon on how nerds are the new messiah and the more Lady Gaga our lifestyle, the better. I am well aware of the fact that the world is not always a perfect place. I have no issue with people being gay, straight, short, tall, fat, thin or anything else.  I’m acutely aware of the fact that bullying goes on, and I applaud trying to send a message of social consciousness. However, I thought I was going to see a concert!

Sometimes it’s nice not to be preached to and allowed to relax and not have to be schooled in the multitude of prejudices that exist in the world. What I got instead felt slightly patronizing and pious, not to mention 3D doesn’t work in this setting. It looked cool when they threw confetti in the end, but the rest of the time it was irritating at best. That said, the girls loved it and have declared it to be the second best movie in the world. Oddly enough, their #1 pick is Rabbit Hole because it made them cry.

Maybe I’m just reeling from the fact that it cost so much to take two little girls to the movies, but as far as I’m concerned, that stunk.
