She Writes has changed its interface since the last live chat about The Submission Mission. To participate in a live chat, you must log in at She Writes (that’s not new). Then, look for the box partway down in the left two-thirds of the webpage—the box has tabs: Features, Community Blog, Events, Live Chat, Ask a She Writer. Just click on the Live Chat tab, and the chat window will open.

During the July live chat for The Submission Mission, I realized that I might not be available on August 5 for the next live chat. Luckily, Erika Dreifus had participated in that July chat, and she’s agreed to guest host the August live chat.

In July, The Submission Mission chatters started talking about important kinds of submissions that don’t lead to publication per se. Though these live chats always meander with participants’ interests, Erika will begin the chat with a focus on these other kinds of submissions: contests, grants, fellowships, and residencies. Erika has won and been a finalist in contests, has been awarded grants and fellowships, and has held writing residencies, so she can speak to these topics from experience. And the timing is great because there are several contest and residency deadlines in August and September!

She Writers will like Erika as a Guest Host a lot. She is the editor-publisher of the free monthly newsletter The Practicing Writer, which has 3700 subscribers. If you want to read or subscribe, here’s the link: http://www.erikadreifus.com/newsletter/. Erika is also a Contributing Editor for Fiction Writers Review.

Erika’s collection of short stories, The Quiet Americans, was published by Last Light Studio this year. Her stories have also appeared in TriQuarterly, Lilith, Bellevue Literary Review, and lots of other journals. She publishes poetry, essays, and loads of book reviews, so she has a good sense of what submission might mean from one genre to the next.

Some of her published essays are about the writing profession so she’ll bring a lot of insight to the August live chat. A couple of years ago, Erika’s article about choosing a writers’ conference appeared in The Writer, and earlier this year, AWP’s The Writer’s Chronicle published her piece about getting the most out of their conference.

Be sure you mark your calendar for August 5! Invite others too! Now, if I can just figure out how I can sit in on the August live chat!
