Though I've always loved writing, what actually gave birth to the idea of my becoming a writer was my expat status. Unable to get a job because I had no work permit and couldn't speak the language, I began finding ways to make money that didn't require those two things.

In fact, many expats turn to writing because it is such a portable career. It can be done from pretty much anywhere at pretty much any time. All you need is your imagination and a pen and paper or a laptop.

It wasn't long after beginning this journey that I came across expat writer/publisher/mentor/speaker extraordinair Jo Parfitt. An expat herself, Jo has managed to start her own publishing company, mentor aspiring writers, and author over 26 books while moving from Dubai to Oman to the UK to the Netherlands.

Recently, Jo was a guest poster at my expat blog Clogs and Tulips: An American in Holland. In her post, she lists the 6 things every wannabe expat writer needs to know to get started with their career. Her list includes:
  • Getting out to meet people and doing new things
  • Asking for favors
  • Knowing how to sell an idea
  • Being flexible
  • Continuing to learn
  • and the value of starting small

To read her post, head on over to Clogs and Tulips: An American in Holland. Jo's advice is sure to get you started on the right track!

Are you an expat writer? What has helped you get your career off the ground?
