What inspires me to make a book? My dad. As a tribute to my father's lifelong desire to share his childhood with me and with my brother and sisters, I write children's books. Dad was born on a Maryland farm in 1920, so he was nine when the Great Depression hit America. He used to laugh and say that his family was so poor they never felt the Depression. Dad was the third of eight children in his family, but he was born older than the others. You know what I mean. You've known someone yourself who seems to take on responsibilities and burdens from an early age. An old soul.

Before he passed away, Dad told many stories of everyday farm life in early 20th century American. Tales of climbing the ladder to the hayloft when he was three or four to throw down the hay to the milk cow, of stirring fragrant apple butter over the fire and of puzzling over why the girls and boys had separate outhouses at school.

My love, respect and allegiance to my father and his kind and thoughtful ways - that's what inspires me to make books.

Ack! Can you change the time on the post to today?  That way it will pull to the top!  Thanks so much Mary.  All best, Deborah

Oops - I spoke to soon.  Just realized the image needs to be resized.  When you're in visual editor mode, click "edit" on the photo and resize to 300?  Thank you Mary!!

Mary, beautiful -- both the post and the sentiment.  True confession: I choked up as I read it.  Could you reverse the photo and the text, so that the photo is what we see at the top?  And then I'll feature it atop the main page!  I think you might want to resize the photo to make it smaller -- 300 or so would be great.  I want everyone at She Writes to see it.  Please feel free to email me or our Social Community Manager, Julia Barry at [email protected], if you have any questions on the tech side.  And thank you for being here at She Writes.
