The many forms of writing, I love them all. Well, maybe not ALL, but I have dabbled in some of everything. Is this okay? Can a writer write some of everything? Novel writing. I have completed two. One edited and ready to go, the next needs a couple rounds of editing. I have not dabbled in this long, and never been formally trained, outside of reading some books and trolling the internet. I have been writing novellas since I was twelve. Complete stories, but rather short compared to traditional novels. I thought it would be a chore to get up to 70,000 words, but I find it to be quite easy once I outline the story. Screenwriting. I chose to study this in college. I don’t remember what made me go this route, when all I thought about in my teen years was publishing a book. But I was a film/TV production major and took a class for fun. I wanted to know all about the “behind the scenes” element of films. I was hooked! It was an easier form for me to write and I could crank them out very easily. Four finished screenplays in two years. I found my calling! Short Stories. I pretty much write these as needed. I took a short writing class and it was just decent. At the time, my writing was more “wordy” but not enough to write a full length novel. I was conflicted in the class. My first short story was crap. The class pretty much critiqued it as a soap opera wannabe. It was. My next was so-oo long, it might as well been the first few chapters of a novel (and I tried making it a novel with no luck). Now I will write short stories if I want to submit it to a special project or contest. Poetry. I was writing for years before I took a creative writing class my senior year in high school and we had to write poems. Really? I sucked at it. There was no need for me to really write poetry again, but then I decided I wanted to do open mic. I could write a poem and do that! I dabbled at that a few times, then started writing poems for myself or for my sorority. Still, it’s not my forte. Playwriting. I took a playwriting class and enjoyed it immensely! My goal was to write a one-act play and direct it myself. My teacher even gave me a go ahead that we would do it! I even went around campus and cast my actors. Geez, it never happened, but that would have been great. So, in my repertoire, I have the one one-act play and a musical I have dabbled with. What? A musical? Yes, I wrote a musical play, songs and all, which brings me to… Song writing. Yes, I have dabbled here. Mostly writing for the musical or my other writing projects. If one of my characters is a singer/rapper, I like to write the songs they would sing, whether they perform them in the story or not. I have not seriously written a song I would submit to real artists, but if needed, I think I could write a song no problem. Shorts, skits, monologues. There was this really FUN class I took in college, I don’t remember the name of it. Basically we write performance pieces. It was a great small class of about 10. Each week we presented new work and performed it. I LOVED THIS CLASS. And the teacher happened to love me! He selected me to perform a piece at a special function once, and I was all nerves! The final project of the year was to perform several of our skits and monologues to a large live audience. Talk about adrenaline rush! Most writers are not performers, but studying acting in high school, and being an around DRAMA QUEEN sure helped me get over any stage anxiety. Blogging. It’s something new, but it’s still writing! And if a writer must write something everyday, blogging is a good habit to get into. Sometimes my blogs are just about my personal life, sometimes, on whatever is in my heart that day. Many blogs go on to become very well-known and successful (I’m thinking Julie and Julia movie, but there are others). There are other writing genres I have dabbled in, but none would be considered creative. Like I studied journalism and wrote a few articles for an online magazine. I also did a lot of newsletter writing. Basically any other type of writing, I can do that as well. Okay, I just really like to write, and that’s what writers should do!
