It started with a cupcake; at least that’s how we like to romanticize the beginning, when we gathered casually but religiously every Friday for breakfast or lunch. The group has morphed in 2 years; growing in the summer, shrinking in the fall, new members arriving in Spring, visas running out and jobs ending, leaving the remaining few huddled over hot chocolate and cake in winter, dreaming of the following season when we know we will be a crowd once again. Arbitrary introductions and tenacious links evolve into lasting friendships until we no longer remember how we met. We are an eclectic group with the youngest being mere babes in arms, whilst the eldest, well, it’s not polite to discuss a lady’s age. The only prerequisite is that you are able to make breakfast or lunch on a Friday. Don’t these people have jobs to go to, we hear you ask. We are mothers, freelancers, students and cunning individuals who negotiated a 4 day week. Could the New York Friday Lunch Club exist in any other city? We don’t think so as we have all lived in different cities all over the world and so far NY’s transient society is the only one conducive to the thriving and ever changing nature of our lunch club. Maybe it helps that this city has its own idiosyncrasies and social protocol; pancakes and brunch, martinis, play dates, coffee and more, or maybe it’s the nature of the dream chaser with the golden ticket who arrives in New York despite the Visa hurdles, the job competition and the Atlantic divide and makes it a priority to meet like-minded people. Or maybe the sheer size makes it easier to meet people – we are after all literally living on top of one another in Manhattan. We hope you enjoy the NY Friday Lunch Club’s “sweetest bites out of a very big apple” and that they take you off the tourist trail to New Yorkers favorite spas, bars, boutiques and of course, coffee & cake shops. Love, The New York Friday Lunch Club www.newyorkfridaylunchclub.com X
