Eye of Newt and Other Elements of Style
Contributor
Last night I dreamed I was blogging about the aforementioned topic...perhaps because the day before I eavesdropped on a Airiele Ford’s interview with Linda Silvertsen about “trimming the fat off your writing”. I was aghast at how many mistakes I make according to the Elements of Style, by William Strunk. In my dream I schlepped down a back alley to a witchcraft store. The hunchbacked warlock behind the counter diagnosed my problem, raised his curved, boney finger, and directed me to the aisle between the wool of bat and the lizard’s leg, to the Eye of Newt section. “What the heck is a Newt?” I cringed. I looked into the bulging "eye" in the midst of a green cloud of goo, reminding me of Dr. Seus' green eggs (and ham). I bought two just be safe. I must have thought I needed more than divine intervention to help me rid my habit of including fat and useless words in my writing such as such as, that, and actually. The Eye of Newt must have worked because this is the first blog I’ve written that only has two that’s in it. That is a miracle! (Ok, three). ****** If you have strange dreams you would like to discuss with me and other dreamers, check out my dream circle: http://www.kellysullivanwalden.com/dream-workshops.html
