Thank you, Kamy, for opening this discussion. When I read the Top Ten List of the Best Books, my immediate response was "Where are the women writers?" As director of WOMEN READING ALOUD, a non-profit that promotes and encourages women writers, I am surrounded by women of excellence. In 2003, I opened my doors to women writers. To ignore this faction of writers is ludicrous. We all know this. When I launched my new book of poetry at Starbucks, the only books sold in their stores were by male authors. I e-mailed the president of Starbucks Entertainment in Los Angeles and within 2 days, I received an e-mail and a follow-up phone call. I was told that book placement had nothing to do with gender. Book selections had been an "experiment" in marketing. Not believable. What can we do? To start, we can support one another even more. We can buy books! I realize the importance of lists and contests in the business world of publishing. Do I pay attention to them? No. But I do believe that we can change things, as you suggested, by opening our "wallets." This week, I bought books by Jennifer Lauck and May Sarton. I finished reading Michelle Cameron's new novel and will begin Audrey Niffenegger's. Because of SHEWRITES, I ordered Lisa Gluskin Stonestreet's award winning poetry book, invited Hope Edelmann to speak at WRA, and read the new memoir by Amy Ferris. The list continues. I love supporting women writers! Weekly, they attend workshops in my home where they go deep and write without distraction. I've watched them publish books, hold readings, and find community. Each of us can do something to change the atmosphere by speaking up in our own writing community.
Thank you, Kamy, for SHEWRITES.
