The Digital Goddess: Kim Komando and AZTAP.org

As some of you have read in my monthly newsletter, my daughter, Mona, has started her own online t-shirt business, Theatre Mo Meter. That is quite an amazing feat for an autistic young lady. (I am so proud of her.) The problem was that our old laptop died of a heart-attack about three months ago. (Really, I literally cried; we had that laptop for about 7 years. The laptop is now stashed away in my closet; I can’t throw it away because of its sentimental value—a topic for another blog day.)

Well long story short, I need to replace it so that Mona can create her t-shirt designs. In order to make her designs she needs to be able to run Photoshop—and now a vicious cycle begins. No computer, no Photoshop, no designs, no business….that simple. And to top that off, she wants an IPAD Pro for a certain app as well—another cool thou easily!

Well being a single mom, my cash is limited, you know how it goes. I was at a total loss as to what to do. I soon thought of a syndicated radio show that I usually get to hear after work on Saturday’s: The Kim Komando Show. She gives great advice, and being a Phoenician herself, it kind of feels like she’s family (and only recently I found out that I had interviewed her husband--the not-so-famous Barry Young of KFYI in Phoenix--about 20 years ago as part of my radio assignment---again another story for another blog day. What a small world right?) Anyway, I went online and emailed Kim hoping for a email response. But before I knew it, I was on the show with Kim herself. A miracle! Her voice was like a breeze of fresh air. (You can hear the call here: www.facebook.com/kimkomando/videos/10152518577274979/ )

She was so delightful to chat with. It was like chatting with a friend on the phone. Her advice for me was to look into my daughter’s disability department at her college and her State’s DDD representative, to see if they have some kind of programs for disabled persons. (Wow! Why didn’t I think of that? But then again, I am only human!)

And she was right. I contacted them the next day, and found out that there is such a program in Arizona. The program is Arizona’s Assistive Technology Act Program, or AzTAP. (funded by the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration). I filled out all of the applications online, and my daughter was quickly approved for the discounted electric technology that she needs. Eureka!!!

Thank you, Kim, for your amazing kindness and compassion for those desperate, distant voices on the other end of the phone line. And thank you, AzTAP.org for being available for family and individuals that need it. My problem is solved. (www.marshamarie.com)
