The 7 People It Takes to Write a Book
Contributor

Let all us writers acknowledge one universal fact forever: Writing a book is not a one-man show; it takes a village.

While you may be the creative power behind every word of prose in your literary masterpiece, you likely weren’t alone in collecting inspiration. The support network – whether online or physical – is also an incredibly critical aspect of the writing process. No author is alone in perfecting their books or propelling them to publishing success. Here are the five people in your life that help you write your book – even if you don’t realize it.

The Loved Ones

Face it: Without feeling the depth of love we do for our family, friends and dogs (the obsession is real), there would be no understanding of how to convey that endless love and devotion on pages. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to inject empathy, compassion, sadness, heartbreak or any emotion into the core of your characters. Thank love and those you love – they make you a better writer.

The Enemies

If people didn’t try to tear other people down in life, there would be a dismal shortage of villains or an abundance or boringly mild ones. Thank the people who have made a point to show you unkindness in life – they are fuel for characters like Voldemort.

The Writing Circle

All of us writers – whether introverted or extroverted – have somehow surrounded ourselves with other writer acquaintances who fuel creativity. From following a writer on Twitter who is suffering from writer’s block to the writer you can ask for trusted advice on the direction of your plot, these people are bouncing boards for our brilliance and are to be embraced.

The Copy Editor

No writer goes without making typos. The copy editor is a brilliant human and without he or she, our books would appear significantly more elementary than we’d like to admit and likely no where near publisher ready. The relationship with your copy editor is an important one, so nurture it.

The Agent

If going the traditional route, most major publishing houses won’t accept a manuscript unless an author is represented by an agent. While they weren’t there holding your hand when you were writing your magnum opus, they are the ones who bring those words to written fame, so without them, your book has

The Publicist

With most publishing houses and agencies having little bandwidth and budget for publicity, this vital part of the book publishing process is often done haphazardly. Publicity is a book’s best friend, so go ahead and count this person in from the moment your manuscript is finished if you want your book to hit social waves.

The Influencers

There was a book you read as a child that has never left your heart. There are storytellers you’ve fervently admired from afar in both your present and your past. Thank them, because without these literary influencers you wouldn’t of started typing at all.
