[THE WRITER'S LIFE] Writers Gonna Write
Contributor

You have read this (essay, article, rant, post, blog) before: Girls may just wanna have fun, but writers just wanna write. It’s an easy lament to poke holes in, easy as teachers complaining about their jobs (You get summers off! You don’t work all day!!). In the case of writers, we get things like, “You get to work at Starbucks without the apron!” or “I wish I could sit at home all day in my pajamas to do my job.” An author I know recently posted on Facebook that she had just finished her novel. I responded with, “Now the real work begins!” and she knew exactly what I was talking about. It’s not even the editing, although those are some tough times. No, it’s all the marketing and promotion and selling yourself that makes a writer’s toes curl. And one of the hardest components of that, for me anyway, is video.

So, here’s what I’m going to do for you. I’m going to make this month’s column a video just to show you how, um, easy it is. The statistics tell us that video will soon dominate almost 70% of all consumer Internet traffic, so getting comfy with watching yourself read from your work very well could be worth your while, statistically speaking.

Without further ado, here goes.

  • I cautiously peeked in to see what the comments said...and am happily surprised! Thanks for the feedback and the additional suggestions. I am motivated to do another video one of these days...I'll check in with your channel, Joanne, and get some more pointers! Thank you!

Feeling inspired to try more video work; so, mission accomplished. For some of what I've already done, check out my youtube channel. I like your suggestion about reading excerpts of books you like because I believe in sharing the love and I'm thinking that in addition to reading my own work, I could incorporate video in to some of the book reviews I already do in a series I call blogger on books. Also, you have a very calm/calming video presence which also does a good job of selling the message that we (introverted writers though we are) got this. That, plus I lol'd at your amusement at the words writers use.

Videos are a bit like writing. Write and rewrite. If only I could edit them. Record. Stop. Delete. Repeat. I'll keep trying, and smiling.
