Synopsis

For four weeks, participants will explore one published (easily and freely accessible online) reading and write a short piece of their own using the published writing as inspiration and a jumping off place. The instructor and classmates will respond to the writer's work with comments helpful for going forward after class.

Class Description

Summer Reading/Summer writing is meant, in four weeks, to draw the participant into the literary world of fiction, memoir, poetry and drama. Each week, participants will take on one of the four genres by reading a short work and then using the strategy and form they've experienced, write from their own imaginations and life. Participants will post their writing results for response from classmates and the instructor.

At the end of this class, students will be able to:

• Enjoy the work of writers they may not have heard of
• Enjoy genres they might not usually read
• Employ craft skills of published writers in their own work whatever the genre
• Understand how to give meaningful response to other writers
