Synopsis

The internet has opened up a whole new way for writers to connect not only with potential readers, but with people who share their interests and passions--in other words, to find their tribe. In this class writers will learn how to use blogging, Facebook, Twitter, and Google + to build readership and community.

Class Description

We will cover the basics of using your blog and various social media outlets to build readership, beginning with defining your goals and mapping out your social media strategy. We will cover the basics of setting up a basic Wordpress blog, as well as creating accounts with Facebook, Twitter, and Google +. Students will then learn how to use these tools to connect with and create their own tribes. We will look at example of what works and what does not, and will utilize videos and handouts to learn how to do this. We will also have a yahoogroup for students to connect with and encourage each other, and as well as offering peer critiques and advice.

At the end of this class, students will have a basic working Wordpress blog or, if they already have one, will have learned how to optimize it for best use. They will have accounts with Facebook, Twitter, and Google + and will have learned how to use them to connect with potential readers and build community. Students will have real life experience in using all of these tools and will have begun to build their following.
