How to Manage Your Writing During Busy Times

* This post was originally published in December 2017.

Can you tell that in the coming weeks you're not going to have time for writing? Maybe you are super busy at work or you have family obligations. Or the holidays simply mean that writing is going to take a back seat.

I want to give you a couple of tips for navigating busy times.

First, if you need to take a break from your writing. It’s okay.

It doesn’t have to mean that you’ll never come back to it. Nor does it mean that you’ll never finish what you started. In fact, the best thing you can do for you and your writing when things get busy is to make a conscious choice about how you are going to show up.

You can decide. Are you going to shift things around so that you can keep writing? Or are you going to take a step back and dial back your expectations?

Here’s how I like to do that. Grab pen and paper and answer these questions:

  • What do you have on your plate in the coming weeks?
  • How much time do you actually have for writing?
  • How much energy do you think you’ll have?

Based on your answers you can decide. How and when are you going to show up? Or are you going to take a break?

If you do decide to take a break, then there's one more step for you.

Give yourself a starting point for when it’s time to come back to your writing.

I like to go into the draft that I’ve been working on, and at the bottom leave myself a few notes about the scenes I think come next. You might decide to read the last three pages you wrote and then spend ten minutes freewriting about the possibilities: what could you write next?

Whatever you choose, the brilliant thing about this is that when you are ready to come back to your writing you have a place to start.

Instead of worrying out about the best way to start again or procrastinating, you can go straight to the notes you left yourself. The transition is so much smoother and you’ll be back to your writing in a much quicker time frame.

Let me know in the comments below or on Facebook how you plan to get through this busy time.
