Do you ever feel like you’re falling short of every writing rule that was ever written? You’re not writing every day or first thing in the morning. You’re not writing from 9 to 5 and when it comes to treating it like a job… well, not exactly.

Here’s the deal: That’s okay and I want to tell you why. Check out my latest video or keep reading below:

None of those writing rules take into account one simple but important fact: You are more than a writer.

So often we forget that too. We set goals and expectations and forget to take that into account.

Take my example. In addition to being a writer I’m a business owner. I like to spend time outside hiking, biking, climbing, and skiing. I love spending time with my friends and family. I love to cook good meals. And I’m not willing to give those things up.

When I recognized that and dialed back my expectations, an unexpected thing happened.

I actually wrote more.

Instead of expecting too much from myself and creating too much pressure, I could meet my expectations and sometimes exceed them. That felt so much better than feeling like I never measured up.

I want to invite you to do the same. To ease the pressure and recognize that you are more than a writer.

Grab pen and paper and take a few minutes right now to reflect:

·      What is important to you in addition to writing?

·      What else is a part of your life that you value?

·      Given that, where does writing fit into the picture?

A word of caution: Try not to strive for the ideal here. The ideal starts to sound like write everyday and write from nine to five. We’re going for the realistic.

Given what you love, given what you do, given the whole picture of your life, where does writing fit in? Let me know what you discover in the comments below or over on the Facebook page.
