You've spruced up that manuscript. You've done the research for agents and you've had a few rejections. You have author friends who ask 'why not self publish, it would save you time'. They might be right, but they might also have a hard time excepting honest feedback. They might be impatient and unwilling to except that waiting patiently might result in better results.

Self publishing, even hybrid publishing, has it's perks (you get more money out of each project and you have the control on how much exposure it gets) but there are downsides. The time you're spending marketing, managing your account, checking social media, and all that jazz-you could be writing (or editing) the next project! There are only so many hours in a day, in a week, that if you calculate that and how much having an actual literary agent-who has connections in the industry, knows how to deal with financial dues being unmet, and contract disputes-you're saving yourself a lot of hassle and money. Would you rather spend time writing (and maybe editing) or would you rather split it between that and basically being a social media manager/accountant/editor/and marketer? That to me, feels a little mindboggling (add to this being a friend, a mother, and a wife and that third glass of Pinot Noir will look more tempting to some). Agents know what the industry wants, what it's looking for, what will sell well (and won't sell well) that it's worth having a percentage of your paycheque and royalties go these individuals. Besides, if we don't use them, and we rely on technology like we do at the grocery store, when we book trips, or do our shopping-literary agents will slowly disappear.Just like half of the jobs that once existed....
