Every month She Writes will be featuring an exceptional writer, whether it be an author, blogger, copywriter or journalist as our guest editor. This writer will share their unique experience, provide a sample of their work, and answer a few burning questions from She Writes. This month, we’d like to welcome our August guest editor Justina Chen!

About Justina

Born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania to Taiwanese-American parents, Justina Chen wrote her first YA novella at the young age of eight. While it wasn’t published, it was definitely a sign of things to come. While studying at Stanford a college professor told her to give up her dream of ever being published. Crushed, she moved away from writing and enjoyed a successful career with Microsoft. After becoming a mother she recognized that experience with her professor was a teaching moment. She would never want her children to allow someone to derail their dreams so she enrolled in a writing class and on the last day of class she had sold her first book and hasn’t stopped since. Now with nine published books, we can't wait to see what she has planned next.

About Lovely, Dark, and Deep

After returning from a trip to Africa, high school senior Viola Li finds herself with an extreme case of photosensitivity and everything about her life has to change. Despite her parent efforts to completely shield her from any light source, Viola is determined to continue to have a normal life, or at least as normal as possible. Her budding romance with Josh will test the boundaries of her photosensitivity and her relationship with her parents.

"A luminous read that will rekindle your faith in the indomitable human spirit and make you want to spend more time in starlight." -- Matthew Quick, author of The Silver Linings Playbook and Every Exquisite Thing

"Viola's story explores one of life's big questions: are we defined by our losses or will we allow them to lead us into an even more meaningful hero's journey? In Lovely, Dark, and Deep, Justina Chen has crafted an inspiring, romantic novel full of redemption and hope for teens and adults alike.” – Mitali Perkins, author of You Bring the Distant Near

Make sure you pick up Justina’s book and stay tuned for exclusive interviews, an excerpt and more!
