Book Review of “Maggie Dewdrop: The Feather of Flight” by Black Rose Writing Author G. Wayne Mello

“Maggie Dewdrop: The Feather of Flight” is an endearing story in that it reminds us of the importance of dreams and to look to the stars or to have faith more specifically and to utilize the resources and talents or gifts you have available to you in order to accomplish what you set out to accomplish, which is a good lesson for any young reader or child.

What I love most about this book is that it is nostalgic, as the art is reminiscent of the 80’s, reminding me of The Secret of Nimh and Precious Moments Animals Coloring Books.  The font used to tell the story is very befitting and another detail you are sure to take notice of, as well as the color scheme which is easy on the eyes and not overly bright or fluorescent, but earthly tones that go right along with the theme of magic and nature.

Moreover, the characters are intriguing and memorable from Maggie Dew Drop to Figwort and Nocturna to name a few.  This is a definite recommended read, especially before bedtime when tucking in your young ones, especially since it ends on a happy note.  It’s about forty pages and doesn’t boast overly sophisticated words.  In fact, some great vocabulary words showcased in this book include: nightingale, herbs, petunia, anticipation, nestled, curiosity, whittled, hazy, flutter, perched, shimmering, mysteriously and exclaimed.

This book even exudes humor your little ones might find entertaining: “It’s the perfect night to fly over the lake and eat up the fattest, juiciest bugs.”

And suspense: “Please don’t eat me!” Maggie cried…

And Wisdom: “Be careful what you wish for…If you had wings you wouldn’t have paws! You need those to gather your treasures and make your creations!”

And a noteworthy setting: Ivymarsh Forest, one evening at the Great Oak Tree.

The author G. Wayne Mello truly outdid himself and I look forward to reading more stories from him, as his love of art and literature truly comes across.  Thanks for sharing this beautifully illustrated and heart-warming story.
