Remodeling Your Home For Writing Your Story in the Golden Years

As the years pass, we collect wisdom, humor, love and loss and can share those with others through our writing. Design trends change each season with the wind and before you know it, you're looking to update your beloved home to make it more inspiring and creatively fresh. Depending on your unique needs and personal styling choices, the options available to you are vast and endless. Express yourself the way you enjoy most, whether it’s through vibrant colors, re-arranging and repurposing what you already have, or with newer shabby chic designs. Remember, you’ll be the one enjoying and writing in your space for years to come, so put a little bit of your personality into your home.

Spruce up the Living Space

First and foremost is the interior, where most spend the majority of time at home and probably most of your time writing. Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and office spaces all beckon your attention. Where is the best space to start? First, try the walls. If they're bare, look into eclectic artwork from your favorite local artist or large decorative maps that span the globe for inspiration. If you're looking to change up the floors, you can easily make an impactful change with the use of abstract or geometric design rugs.

Then, consider your furniture and electronics. Perhaps you're thinking that a stylish new Scandinavian couch is in order, or maybe a mid-century modern coffee table is more your style. In regards to technology, you can add new devices including flat screen televisions, surround sound systems and or safety items including electronic doorbells. If your living space is part of an assisted living facility, then remote monitoring solutions may be offered to ensure your safety when you need it most.

Expand and Enhance Your Outdoor Space

When the sun is shining and the weather is beautiful, we all want to write outdoors. So, why not make your outdoor space just as lovely, work-friendly, comfortable and inviting as the interior? Decorating it doesn’t have to be a chore with some quick and easy tips. Start with adding plants and flowers to add visual depth and appeal to your outdoor space. You can use brilliantly designed DIY planters to jazz up the place. Place some comfortable seating and a table where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, your pen and paper or conversation with a friend and you have a winning formula!

Space for Exercise and Relaxation

Maybe you’re into yoga or Tai Chi between paragraphs and you need space to practice indoors when it’s raining outside. Dedicate a space in your home where you can go solely for exercise. It doesn't have to be a large space or even a complete home gym, just make it comfortable for your desired activity. Decorate the area with calming imagery and soothing colors to optimize the experience. You can create an atmosphere similar to spiritual healing retreats to keep your mind, soul and body in balance.

The Heart of the Home

What’s the heart of any home, no matter the storyline? The kitchen of course! A kitchen remodel can really make a difference in the overall feel of your home. Start with new appliances, as technology has come a long way. Your refrigerator can be more than just a source of food storage now. It can tell you the weather, event calendar, shopping lists and current events. If you’re an avid baker, you will benefit from double ovens for when holiday requests and orders come rolling in, or you have a classroom full of kids to bake cupcakes for. Another important and convenient addition to consider is countertop seating. This facilitates talk with friends in your writing groups while cooking, enjoy breakfast or video chatting with the grandkids.

With some minor adjustments around your home, your indoor and outdoor spaces can be more cozy and comfortable. Be sure to choose the design styles that appeal to you, so you can fully enjoy the decor. The transition into writing and creating in your golden years can and will be beautiful with the right updates to your space.
