There’s a considerable amount of money to be made as a freelance writer. As the number of internet users continues to increase, the demand for talented writers rises. Companies large and small realize the significance of maintaining a consistent stream of web content for their target audiences. Freelance writers have the potential to use their passions and talents to earn a decent living.

The only problem is, a freelance writer is only one person. No matter how great they are at creating compelling stories or how fast they can type, there’s only so much work they can take on. Essentially, those looking to earn more money consider the idea of starting their own content writing business. By starting a company and collaborating with or hiring a team of writers, you can expand your reach and increase your profits. Here’s a few tips on how to get started.

Start with a Business Plan

Whether you’ve been writing as a freelancer for years or you’re just starting out in the game it is ideal to start with an efficient business plan. Your plan serves as a guide to help you reach your goals faster. It should clearly outline details about your writing service. For instance, how much do you hope to gross? How many writers will you need to hire to get to this goal and/or satisfy your growing list of clients?

Legalize the Business

As a freelance writer, you may have been fine with using your name and filing tax forms using your social security number. Now that you’re starting a business, however, there are a few extra steps you need to take. This includes registering a company name and determining what type of entity you’d like to run. You’ll need to speak with your local clerk’s office to find out what types of licenses or insurance you may need to legally run your writing business.

Determine Your Niche

If you don’t already have one or are considering the possibility of expanding your services, you’ll need to determine your niche. Which industries are you best equipped to write for? Where does your education, experience, or passion take you? If you were good at finances, for example, you might prefer to write for individuals looking to start a CPA firm. If you don’t personally have the experience in a particular industry but are still interested in providing services in that area, you can always hire writers who have experience in that field.  

Decide on Services and Rates

There are several types of writing services that you can offer your clients.  You can write articles or blogs, but you can also write ebooks, magazine editorials, research papers, social media content, web content, and more. After locking in your list of services, you’ll need to determine how much you’ll charge. You can do some research to see what other companies are charging, however, you should also consider your overhead costs when factoring rates.

You’re going to need a group of solid writers to join your company if you’re going to keep up with your new writing services. You should start by talking with an employment attorney to ensure that you’re in compliance and have your paperwork, contracts, and other documents in order. Then, find the best platform to begin advertising for writers. There  are a lot of writers out there, so to narrow down your results it is recommended that you require a test article. This will give you an idea of what their abilities are.
