Now that we’ve covered Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, I thought it would be fun to explore a few ways authors can take advantage of the latest social media trend: Instagram.

Instagram is an awesome outlet that can be dedicated to your reader community when used appropriately.

Here are 5 quick tips to help boost your brand and influence on Instagram:

1. Inspire your fans

What inspires you most? Share an image of a favorite quote or daily inspiration.

2. Follow bloggers & readers who enjoy books

There are so many awesome, book-loving accounts that share fun, book-related news that you might be interested in. Follow bloggers that you would love to review your book, and take advantage of a new form of networking!

Here are a few accounts I love:

3. Give fans an inside look

Where is your favorite place to write?  What is your go-to caffeine preference when you’re writing? This is an awesome way to give your followers a little more perspective on what your day-to-day life is like.

4. Follow other authors & stay updated

Support other authors and stay connected in a new way! Instagram is an awesome opportunity to cultivate new friendships with people that have similar interests and experiences as you!

5. Interact with your fans

Need to extend your reach and gain some new followers? Start an Instagram challenge with a popular hashtag. Create fun post ideas for every day, and get your fans to participate for a chance to win!

Leave any Instagram-specific questions you have below; I'd love to share some more tips with you!
Don't forget to leave your Instagram handle below, too!

I don't have an iPhone so I got my teenage niece to set up my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/musicalyouth) which made sense to me at the time since the book I was promoting at the time, Musical Youth, is targeting teenagers. Plus, the thought of having to keep up with yet another social media platform was making my head spin (when would I write?) So, it's there though not very active (because, teenager). Lots of nuggets in this post though for if (when?) I get more insta-active.

Per your request, I failed to provide my Instagram handle. It is @SomerEmpress. I would love if you took a look and share with me what I can do differently and/or better. Thank you!

This is extremely helpful, thank you. I am already employing some of the suggestions; the others, I need to get work on stat! :) Thank you!

  • Thank you for this very helpful post.  I am new to the world of "memes."  Haven't tried it on FB or Instagram.  Isthe process for creating them simple?

  • Leah DeCesare

As a newer Instagram user working on this specifically for my author platform, this was helpful! Thanks! @leah.decesare

  • Jeanne Nicholas

Thanks for the info. So how does this app differ greatly from Pinterest?

  • Susan Williams

HI, can I ask. If you are publishing different types of books under different pseudonyms, can you set up an Instagram account for each one, or will it automatically synch with your phone and beam it out to everyone in your address book?

    Thanks

I started Instagram a while ago and just realized my posts were all over the place with a myriad of differing posts.  No theme.  Fixed that today, thanks to you, Janay!  tdreffin is my handle.  See you there!

Thank you Janay. I really like Instagram. I am SuziBB on Instagram. I agree about interaction. I really enjoy seeing what lights other writers up and find that hashtagging draws me in to circles of other creatives in good ways. I will find you there now. xoS

Don't you need an Apple phone to use it? Too bad, I'm not getting an Apple. I got burned by that company before. They're basically too exclusive.

  • Jules Dixon

Excellent article. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thanks Janay. I'm trying to grow my Instagram following.

  • I'm very excited to try this!  Thank you, Janay.

Great advice! I have used Instagram for fun over the last year, but still have to incorporate it into the promotion of the upcoming book. Above blog post comes very handy. Thanks!

Hi Patricia, Unfortunately Instagram is limited to mobile devices when it comes to posting on the network. You can access Instagram and search other accounts however you can't post which is a little frustrating (hopefully the app changes in the near future)

  • Linda Strawn

I'm trying to use it at my desktop, then it occurs to me I downloaded the app onto my laptop. No wonder I couldn't do anything with it. Instructions told me to click on different icons not visible on my desktop monitor. Learn something new everyday =)

  • Patricia Robertson

Just checked Instagram. Appears you need to have an iphone or ipad to use it. Is there any other way to do this?

  • Janay Lampkin

Hang in there, Linda! It can be a little difficult at first, but once you get in the swing of things I know you will enjoy it.  Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime, I'm happy to help!

  • Linda Strawn

I just started using Instagram. It's a little crazy navigating it. I can't even change my profile picture, and I'm fairly tech savvy. Once I get acclimated, I'm going to follow your suggestions. This is a great way to generate interest in my books and interact with potential and current readers.

  • Janay Lampkin

So happy to hear that, Linda!

  • Linda Hoenigsberg

I am just now jumping onto the Instagram wagon and just downloaded the app to my phone this morning, so this post was so "perfect timing." Thanks!
