Hi everybody! First of all a belated thanks, here on my blog, for all the good wishes and warm words on Brooke's and my trip to Nashville last week to meet with our distribution team at Ingram Publisher Services for the very first time. The sales reps were energized and excited by our cutting-edge model, which left us feeling the same way.

In that pioneering spirit, we have another announcement to make. She Writes is partnering with a serial publishing startup called JukePop Serials to give She Writes members an exclusive opportunity to upload their work, chapter by chapter, and have it read by our community and the broader JukePop audience and voted on over a four-month period. When the timeframe is up, the three most popular entries in the fiction and nonfiction categories will each receive a cash prize. We are thrilled about this digital platform for fiction and nonfiction writers from She Writes to share their work and get feedback, as the site allows for both of those things in addition to enabling readers to vote on and bookmark their favorites.

In this new and exciting publishing landscape, building audience for a work through innovative platforms like JukePop seems like the wave of the future -- or at least one of them -- so we are proud to be experimenting with it, and hope to get lots of feedback from you on the experience. Please see below for instructions on how to enter. You may direct all questions to [email protected].

JUKEPOP SERIALS + SHE WRITES CONTEST

Starting December 9, 2013 through March 10, 2014 JukePop Serials and She Writes will be sponsoring the first annual JukePop + She Writes Contest where She Writes writers are invited to submit their stories on JukePop and compete to win cash prize awards in two categories – fiction or non-fiction.

First Place Prize: $150 Second Place Prize: $75 Third Place Prize: $25

Here’s what you need to do to participate:

1. Register for your JukePop Serials account ahead of time at http://www.jukepopserials.com/

2. Familiarize yourself with our publishing platform, including how +Votes work. Contest winners are determined based on +Votes.

3. Submit your first chapter at anytime. Log into your JukePop account and go to My Account -> Submit to submit your first chapter. Yes, that’s right, we just need your first chapter to get started. Important: to be eligible for the She Writes contest, you must, on the Submit page, make sure to click the Submit drop down and select which She Writes category you’re submitting to – fiction or non-fiction.

4. After your first chapter is submitted, our JukePop Editor will review your submission and get back to you within 1 – 2 weeks on steps to take to officially publish your story.

5. If your submission is accepted, you’ll be notified via email and need to follow the instructions in the email to officially publish your story on the page dedicated to She Writes authors.

6. Once your story is published, pace your chapter submissions so that readers get to enjoy a couple new chapters every week or two. During this time, promote your story to all your friends and family to get them to read and +Vote. You can use our Facebook Share and Twitter Tweet buttons to get the word out. If you have a personal blog, tell everyone there.

JukePop + She Writes Contest Terms and Conditions:

1. The contest period starts on December 5, 2013 and runs through March 10, 2014. Participants can submit anytime during the contest period.

2. Winners will be determined by the number of +Votes received during the contest period.

3. All entries must be original. She Writes writers must select to submit to either She Writes Contest Fiction or She Writes Contest Non-fiction. No exclusions on genres.

Thanks, Kelly, for checking this out.

  • I sent my questions (in post below) to JukePop and received a very prompt reply (reprinted here).  The 6-month exclusivity is the deal-breaker for me.  I submit parts of my book to contests and anthologies -- that pay.  I can't afford to tie up my work for 6 months on a free web site.  While this doesn't work for me, perhaps it will for others.  Good luck!  (I am disappointed that this point wasn't mentioned in either the post above or in JukePop's pdf.  Could've saved me a lot of time!)

    Hello Kelly,

    Thanks for the email.
    Let's see
You do retain all rights to your work with us, you are merely letting us display your work on our site and apps.
Not sure regarding submitting to other contests. We do take work that has already been published and a lot of contests do as well.  However our terms are for 6 months exclusivity and then you are welcome to submit the work elsewhere after the initial 6 months is up.
We are one year into our beta and have a large, enthusiastic broad readership. Our demographics range is aged15 to 85 globally. New readers will find your work through our promotions and search features.
Please email if you have further questions.

  • Hmmm, looks like an interesting way to build a platform.  But, considerations:

    1.  Do I retain the rights to my work?

    2.  Since "publishing" on JukePop is considered published, it means I can't submit any of this work elsewhere (contests, anthologies) that require first rights -- and those other outlets might pay.

    3.  Who reads JukePop?  Besides my own promotional efforts to my peeps (and, frankly, I steer them to my own blog), how does the general public find me on JukePop?

    This sounds interesting, but...

Curious about others' questions and experiences!

If you enter this contest are you allowed to publish your own ebook from the material later?

Thinking about this . . . might be able to use novel from nanowrimo challenge.
