Hey all!!!

I was interested in how many members here use programs like Scrivener, Dramatica, Write5, or WriteWayPro (etc) to write their novels? I am one of them but some I have spoken to either: a) don't know what I am tolking about or b) think it is a waste of time.

I know it has helped me immensly with organization and keeping my thoughts together (not to mention enough big names use the programs themselves lol!)..

Anyway, does anyone else use them? And what is your take on them?

    @NyaB

    My thoughts exactly on tht program lol so I wasn't interested in that.

    I use Scrivener. It really is a very good writing program to avoid distraction as well as organize your thoughts, work through layouts, etc. Im currently still in first draft but can already see that it will be even more useful in the future drafts of the story.

    At one point, I did use Dramatica, but to be honest it became more work than it was worth first trying to figure out HOW to use it and second trying to get through all the questions. I believe it does indeed have its benefits but at this point in my writing, I need something a bit less complex to simply get the story down on paper.

  • LeTeisha, this is very helpful. I will definitely be checking out Scrivener. And now I have to look at Sonar3 -- for when I get to that point. Thanks.

    @Shari

    I am not sure which is my favorite!!! Dramatica helped me with a working function of my characters and the push behind them. However I found the working prints and questions almost too cumbersome because they all had to be done BEFORE you could move to another one. (What writer knows everything right up front?! lol)

    However, I believe my favorites are yWrite5 and Scrivener!! Scrivener is like an updated version of yWrite in many ways with a lot of tutorials and a majorly updates screen view. I absolutely love that I can blank out the background, add a peaceful beach scene, lower the opacity on the writing page and have at in a soothign atmosphese. These are some of the upgrades that I like about Scrivener that have made it jump to the top of the list with yWrite. Sonar3 program then allows me to track my submissions, markets, books (unfinished and finished), agents, websites, and everything into one place that I can click and view everything attached to it. With those programs together, I've found a power house that has allowed me to complete 8 novels in my 4 year published (because lord knows I've been writing longer) career.

    Hope that helped and was clear :)

  • I have yWriter5. I have used it to work on several projects. I am a projects collector, having not completed any. But I find that this program makes it easy for me in several ways.

    1. The story boards lets you move events around in that view, like working with postcards
    2. The ability to upload to a web page is helpful -- I can easily pull the code and work on it in my code editor
    3. I can go back and add to characters, locations and props as it comes to me and everything is in one place
    4. The writing stats tools are great, with many details right up front, ie word count per section and running total
    5. Lots of places to make notes (scene notes, character, location, goals) make it easy to keep track of my ideas as they are formulate

    I could probably come up with a few more but you get the picture. The others you listed I don't know about but I will look at those too -- just in case they have something different I might find useful.

    I'm curious to know which is your favorite.
