Hi everybody! I just wanted to connect with anyone who will be at AWP next week in Chicago. (For those of you who don't know, AWP stands for Associated Writers' Programs, and every year the meeting features lots of terrific programming dedicated to writers and writing.) She Writes will be co-hosting a reception on Saturday, March 3rd at the Women-Made Gallery in Chicago, an ALL She Writers (whether you are attending AWP or not) are invited. I'd also like to put together a calendar of She Writers panels at AWP so we can all have a quick and easy reference to help us support each other!
So...
If you are on a panel at AWP, please paste the information in the comments below.
My panel will be 4:30PM to 5:45PM on Friday the 2nd (they love to put the ladies last):
The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House: Organizations Supporting Women in the Literary Arts
(Cate Marvin, Julie Kuzneski Wrinn, Kate Gale, Kamy Wicoff, Amy Hoffman)
Boulevard Room A,B,C, Hilton Chicago, 2nd Floor
Female and male authors alike are encouraged to join us for a conversation between founders and directors representing a variety of women’s literary organizations: VIDA: Women in Literary Arts, A Room of Her Own, She Writes, the Kentucky Womens Writers Conference, and the Women’s Review of Books. Presenters will discuss their respective and shared missions to foster the production of women’s writing and challenge its critical reception in our current literary culture.
The reception, co-hosted by She Writes along with the organizations listed above for the panel discussion, will be Saturday March 3rd. For details click here. I'd love to see She Writers there!
Wish I were going to be there. We had such a great gathering in Denver a few years ago.
:-)
My AWP panel (with fellow She-Writers members Gina Frangello & Zoe Zolbrod) is
Chicago Neighborhoods: The City That Motivates, Friday, 1:30 p.m., Chicago Hilton 3rd floor
I'll be presenting at AWP on how to use Twitter to promote yourself as a writer. I'm on at 9 AM, Thurs. March 1. Here are the details of the panel. Please come up and introduce yourself. I'll be at Kamy's event too.
R113. New Media for New (and Old) Authors and Writers
(Priscilla Long, Matt Briggs, Waverly Fitzgerald, Rebecca Agiewich, Cynthia Hartwig)
Private Dining Room 2, Hilton Chicago, 3rd Floor
What do writers need to know about blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LibraryThing, Goodreads, YouTube, SheWrites, Amazon.com, and author pages on these sites and other new media? What is essential? What is too much? What about that book trailer? What considerations and issues should we authors and writers reflect on as we negotiate these new ways of connecting and communicating? Is ignoring all of this an option? What is the downside?
Wish I could be there - maybe next year in Boston.
I will be on a panel called Surprise Me (surprise in the short story) with Robin Black (She Writes member), Ed Porter, and Erin Stalcup, Saturday at noon in Honore Ballroom, Palmer House Hilton, Lobby level. We'd love to meet other She Writers there.
At AWP I'll be part of a panel that's discussing Palabra Pura, a 7-year-old bilingual poetry series sponsored by the Guild Literary Complex (a longtime Chicago literary arts nonprofit). It's happening at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. I would love to meet some SheWriters there and at other events! Here's more info:
R213. Out of the Melting Pot, Into the Fire—Building and Sustaining a Culturally-Specific Reading Series (Mary Hawley, Paul Martinez-Pompa, Johanny Vázquez Paz, Yolanda Nieves) Wiliford A, Hilton Chicago, 3rd Floor Eavesdrop on administrators, curators, and featured artists discussing the dynamic, sometimes conflicted history of Chicago’s longest-running Latino reading series: the Guild Literary Complex’s Palabra Pura. In its seventh year, PP juggles a long-standing mission of culture-specific work with the need for regular reinvention. This discussion touches on issues of race and authenticity, cultural production and ownership, as well as community outreach and institutional integrity. In other words, it can get heated.
Also wanted to plug the reading that will take place before the reception on Saturday...
