Does anyone else use photography to add to your observational skills in writing? I take my pocket-size Canon S95 with me wherever I go. Caught this mundane scene of a traffic cop directing people out of a garage on a gray day in Seattle. The light gathering of this camera is awesome, but even better, it made me "see" the scene with new eyes. Love to see your work if you're doing this.

I literally just got back from a nighttime stroll around my neighborhood taking "odd" pictures of the Christmas lights...without using a flash. I also took coming and going shots of passing cars....so what? I am simply concurring that "random" photos are get starters. They can not only get the juices flowing but can also take you on a truly unexpected journey. I use such things with my students all the time. Some love it and run with it and end up in fantastically interesting places.

I use my photographs to develop photoessays.  Some of them are posted in my Red Room blog, if you'd like to visit it.  Just "google" Red Room and type my name into the search slot at the top.  It will take you to my page.  I hope to get a blog up and running on She Writes soon.

I love my camera. It is always with me. Just yesterday I took a photo of a wire wall planter situated between two retail shops in downtown Corvallis. It caught my fancy and out the camera came.  I need to get a bumper sticker that says, "Will break for photo opps."
