Yes, it's plural. In talking with the two women who will be serving the first one-year term as She Writes' Volunteer Coordinators, it quickly became clear that they would be better together. And if there could be any doubt that fate had a hand in this, consider the fact that while one of them lives on the west coast (in San Diego, California) and one of them lives on the east coast (Apopka, Florida); one of them has an empty nest, and one of them has a nest considerably enlivened by a two-year-old...it was instantly dispelled by the fact that they share the name Medina!
(Cue Twilight Zone music now!)
Next week these two women will write their first She Writes post, kicking off our She Writes Two Year Anniversary meetup celebration for June 29th. But for now I want to begin by sharing a little bit about each of them, and also to say, above all, THANK YOU. Not just to Amber and Monica, but to the dozens who raised your hands and volunteered when I asked you for help. I found it incredibly moving, and comforting, to know that She Writes means enough to so many of you that you are willing to give of your time to help it flourish and grow.
If you would still like to become more involved, please get in touch with one of our new coordinators today!
And they are...
Monica’s Tangled Web (www.monicastangledweb.com)
Twitter: monicastangled
In 2010 Monica began blogging personal stories and humorous observations. She posts twice per week at www.monicastangledweb.com. Her blog has been “Freshly Pressed” twice (featured on the homepage of WordPress.com). Monica has become a Twitter aficionado and has developed quite a following. This spring, Monica became a member of She Writes (friend her!) and even wrote a post on her blog about it. She has taken social media strategy training and can be found on LinkedIn and Facebook.
Monica Medina is Director of Diversity, Engagement and Grants for KPBS-TV and FM. She has won numerous awards, including the San Diego State University President’s Top 25 Leadership award and the National Center for Outreach Professional of the Year award. She has a B.A. from Brandeis University and a Master’s in Journalism from the University of Maryland.
A Year Without Sushi (wosushi.wordpress.com)
Twitter: @amberwest
Sometime in the late '90s, Amber began online journaling and not telling anyone. Now, she finds herself posting five times a week for love and adulation of an ever growing group of strangers. She spent four years with a company focused on the internet and social media, yet it is thanks to a SheWrites marketing chat with Jennifer Wilkov that she's developed quite a following on Twitter (from a few to hundreds and rising in a matter of weeks).
Amber (Medina) West is currently Director of Dog, Toddler, and General Household duties. She has received accolades for her roast pork and pumpkin cupcakes. In all seriousness, she has been involved in various job functions (teacher, entertainer, answerer of phones) and is currently in the midst of making the fifth grade version of her very proud by being a writer.
Congratulations to you both.
Thumbs up!!!!! Pleasure to meet both of you.
Woo hoo! I'm so excited to be one of the new volunteer coordinators and look forward to working with Amber on making this a truly meaningful experience for all She Writes members. I'm also thrilled to share my news with everyone that my blog has been Freshly Pressed today, and you know what they say, three times' the charm!
