LOCATION AS A CHARACTER
Posted by

Almost everything I write, from novels to the rare short story, all take place in the same town, the fictional town of New Grace, South Carolina.  It doesn’t matter which story the character lives in everyone knows that Alexandro’s is the best Italian restaurant for miles and no one makes better baklava than the pastry chef at Crete

Since I use it so often I find that I need to maintain a fact sheet, even a map.  I was wondering if anyone else has a town which has taken on a life of it’s own.

  • Yep. I have 2 full towns developed that play an important part in their individual story. I think developing the location (setting) is just as fun--and important--as creating characters.

I've edited many manuscripts and am surprised at how many writers give little consideration to development in this area. Sometimes the setting is what makes the character do the things they do.
