Writing religion when you have none.

I am a writer of genre fiction, heavy on the supernatural and fantasy. I was looking over my current main characters and none of them have any inkling of religious views, manly because this isn't a topic in my life. However, when you're writing about the supernatural you kinda have to forgo reality and I've noticed that's a little difficult for me sometimes. I find I spend paragraphs trying to explain how something could be real, only to cut those paragraph later because it's irrelevant.

How do you find your lack of belief influencing your writing, fiction or otherwise, and how, if at all, do you deal with it?
