Good resources for the craft of essay writing

Because the essay form is so hard to define and put in a box (thankfully) it can be hard to find resources for writing essays well....any thoughts on particularly good anthologies or books about the craft of essay writing?  I'm particularly interested in the lyric essay, which seems to elude categorization- or instruction...

  • I second Kelly's suggestion of Phillip Lopate's The Art of the Personal Essay. If you don't own it, buy it!
  • Just ran through the writing books on my shelf: I love Essays of E.B. White and Lopate's The Art of the Personal Essay.  For more of an instructional type book, I often turn to Writing Creative Nonfiction, Edited by Forche adn Gerard.  I love Brenda MIller's essay A Braided Heart: Shaping the Lyric Essay.  Also have been turning more and more to The Writer's Portable Mentor by Long, which goes across all genres.
