Fascinating Exercise

I was just talking to my ex-creative writing teacher and he made a very strange comment as we were talking about ways in which to stretch your "writing muscles".

He said to me, "Emily, have you ever just listened to music and generated ideas from that?" And I thought about that for a long moment and realized that sounded like a terrific idea!

Once a day, listen to one song (preferably instrumental but not necessarily classical music) over and over again for several hours. Really listen to the piece and generate scenes and characters in your head. Develop them and before you know it, you'll have a short story or novel! I did this and have already written four short stories. It's truly awesome.

A song I recommend: Death is the road to Awe by Clint Mansell (from The Fountain soundtrack) That song inspired a book for me and it's also a beautiful piece!

GOOD LUCK and let me know if this helped!
