This thread is for us to get to know each other. Feel free to post anything other members may find interesting about you and your writing career. Welcome to the group!
Great to find you in this group, Tammy! I was beginning to wonder if I'd find ANY familiar names! Amazing how many writers there are in Canada who are not part of the various writers' orgs I'm already a part of.
Thanks for the invitation to introduce myself, Diane.
I'm born and raised in Winnipeg, but I've lived in rural Manitoba for nearly 30 years. I LOVE the country life. We currently live in Matlock, a tiny resort community on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. It's a marvellously creative place to be!
I've co-authored 2 books: A Frommer's travel guide and the "Manitoba Book of Everything", a Canadian bestseller. Last year, my first solo project was released by Dundurn Press. "Before You Say Yes ... A Guide to the Pleasure & Pitfalls of Volunteer Boards" was written to help anyone currently volunteering for (or thinking of volunteering for) a non-profit org or assn. I'd be honoured to have SW members join me on the FB page for the book at: http://www.facebook.com/beforeyousayyes.
I am currently working on a new book about chocolate and travel. "Chocolatour: Your Guide to the Faces & Places of Chocolate" will introduce readers to the best chocolate on the planet and the people who are making it. It will be a global journey of sensual discovery. You can get a feel for what I'm doing with the book from my chocolate travel blog at: http://diversionswithdoreen.wordpress.com/. Please drop in and share a comment!
I also have a writer's lifestyle blog which I really enjoy writing. The current post is on "writers helping writers" and it's been my most successful post to date, warranting about 50 responses over the past week. Would love for you all to drop in and share your thoughts on my musings at: http://doreenisthewizardofwords.blogspot.com/.
I'm vice president of the Professional Writers Assn of Canada (PWAC) and a member of The Writers Union of Canada (TWUC) and the Travel Media Assn of Canada (TMAC) as well as being an avid Toastmaster. More on my website at: http://www.wizardofwords.net/.
Hope I haven't gone on too much, but that is the gist of what I'm doing in my writing life. I'll look forward to "meeting" all of you!
Hey Everyone - thanks for having me in your Writers In Canada group. I am lucky because part of what I do for a living involves writing playscripts for drama/musical theatre classes for SlightlyoffBroadway's drama dept. It's such fun to watch and hear my words come to life as the kids prepare to perform my original scripts. Right now I just finished a circus play for kids ages 7-10, a modern-day take on Dickens' Christmas Carol, called Ms. Scrooge, and am working on a full-length pirate musical, also composing some of the songs. I love that I get to write as part of my job.
I belong to an online critique group called the Blue Quills. We formed over 8 years ago and are still going strong. Myself and one other member were both lucky enough to get book contracts. One of the other members does cover art for PBs and others have been published in shorter forms (magazines/anthologies etc.) All of us are passionate about writing and getting published and sharing our work with others. Most of us also blog regularly.
I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario and used the northwestern ontario backdrop for my first suspense novel. I'm going to finish (that sounds positive, right? LOL) my sequel in Nanowrimo and also am 2/3 of the way into another suspense novel as well.
I did join a local writers' group but meetings have become sporadic so I'm trying to start my own novelists' group in my city.
Am looking forward to meeting and interacting with other Canadian writers.
Hello Everyone I am a Canadian currently living in Australia. I know ... talk about being let loose ...so many ideas .. and I thought growing up on the Canadian prairies gave me material!!
No-one is safe. Which is why my children sent me over here even though I told them it is no longer a penal colony. Thank heavens they were still taking boat people that day.
I tell people that I am here doing missionary work amongst the Australians but I think the only ones who believe me are the Americans. They nod their heads a lot and make clucking noises ... evidently they see a big need for Australian missionary work.
OK so ya ... I was kid, then I grew up and I did a bunch of stuff. Yes I had a wild period like so many of us but I am not totally against parenting now because of that, I just say, once they all left home I gained my sanity back.
I am not big on what I did in the past. Today is here and I am excited about what it holds! I have an insatiable appetite for learning and am constantly trying new things, pushing myself and my understandings of life and people. I have spent the last couple of year exploring virtual worlds which has provided delicious insights and contacts with peoples and cultures the world over. I travel tons, and generally take each day as it comes. You will find my writing to be everything from insanity to ranting about social issues, with a real heart for those issues which touch us all as women.
Welcome Lori! I don't know if you've heard about the Writers Community of Durham County but you might want to check it out, it's an extremely active group, and as you know writing can be a lonely occupation. I live up in Barrie and am part of the committee that just formed the Writers Community of Simcoe County. There is also a York group if you know anyone else who may be interested. We have a breakfast or lunch once a month and invite some fabulous speakers. You will love She Writes, it's an awesome forum and I love it!
