Who am I
I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was about ten years old, and love any opportunity to work with the beauty and power of language. I feel very fortunate, because I have achieved my dream: in 2003 my novel, The Protest, was published.
At one reading I gave at a university, the book was introduced by this Kafka quote: “If the book we are reading does not wake us, as with a fist hammering on our skulls, then why do we read it?...A book must be an ice axe to break the sea frozen inside us.” I was honored to have such a description applied to my story.
The novel speaks to the issue of our need to define our life, and that no matter what kind of tragedy we've been through, the way we define our life, or limit its definition, is up to us.
Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to and any scripts or plays I've authored
My novel, The Protest, is inspired by the real-life religious hijacking of my only two children. Thankfully, I have both of them back in my life, but only after years of estrangement. So life is good! Also have published a short story in a regional magazine, and am working on two more short stories that I hope to have ready to submit to The New Yorker soon. Any tips on how to get past the slush piles would be appreciated!
My professional associations
Services I offer to other writers
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons
The Eatonville Writers Group is awesome - they don't pull any punches, and sometimes critiques leave you feeling bloodied, but it's the best critiquing ever!
Media outlets that I currently write for
I am a secretary (my day job) in the President's Office of a two-year college, but have been given the assignment of writing for the college blog - and I love it! You can check out some of my work at www.cptc.edu/blog (look for articles by Dianne Bunnell).
I also am in the process of getting my novel's website back up and running again (long story about losing my domain name, theprotest.org). Soon, I'll have the ability to sell books directly through my website, since the Publisher, WordSmith Publishing, went out of business several years ago, and I haven't contacted Barnes & Nobel to see if they'd be interested in dealing with me now instead.
